Firehouse 5’s Lever Street House Company 5’s New House

The first fire house located south of the Mormon Channel was built at 1127 South California Street and occupied on November 25, 1915. Their response area was bounded by Wilson Way to the East, Turnpike Slough to the west, the Mormon Channel to the north and Ninth Street on the south. The building was of brick and stucco construction, the second story provided the dormitory for sleeping quarters and bathroom and the ground floor for office, kitchen and dinning area, sitting room, and a bay for one motorized engine. Engine Company #5 occupied this site for 44 years until relocated to a new station at the corner of West Eighth Street and Lever Street on June 13, 1959. This new location was larger and provided space for storage of additional equipment. With the relocation of Engine Company #1 to the site on South Fresno Avenue and the development of businesses and residences known as ‘Grupe Business Park’ and also the 1200 to 1500 acre ‘Weston Ranch’ on both side of Interstate 5, Engine Company #5 was relocated to a more modern firehouse at 3499 Manthey Road on January 6, 1994.
